New Waters Tested For Onboard Entertainment
Every year it seems as though entertainment on cruise ships evolves more and more. At first, it started with original productions, and then they started to add guest performers. But now, entertainment on ships has intensified with full productions from Broadway. No, you don’t have to go to Chicago or New York, but on a ship in the middle of the sea.
Norwegian Cruise Lines literally set the stage for spectacular entertainment when they debut the Tony Award-winning Smokey Joe’s Café on the Norwegian Jade. It was what NCL liked to call a “book” show. These were fuller versions of the original productions. The response they got was unbelievable; therefore passengers will probably see Smokey Joe’s Café on the Norwegian Epic as well when it enters service in July of next year.
The Norwegian Epic did not stop with Broadway productions either. When the Epic finally sets sail, it will have aboard the world famous Blue Man Group. Andy Stewart, executive vice president of global sales and passenger services for NCL said, “It was clear to us that the face of Norwegian Epic entertainment was obviously blue” The Blue Man Group will feature outrageous musical performance, comedy, and musical theatrics. All these new performances on the Epic have just intensified the hype for the ship. But, NCL is not the only cruise line diving head first into entertainment, Royal Caribbean has as well.
When Oasis of the Seas debuted almost eight months ago, passengers got to experience a new degree of entertainment. The Aquatheater is one of the most unique venues for performances and shows. In it, Royal Caribbean has beautiful Cirque Du Soleil style water shows in its 17.9 foot deep pool. As well as the water shows at the Aquatheater, and the “Frozen in Time” Ice show in Studio B; there are a variety of small performances at Blaze, Globe & Atlas, and Boleros, plus stand up comedy shows in the Entertainment District called Comedy Live! If that weren’t already enough, Broadway, for the first time, is on Royal Caribbean and the Oasis of the Seas. The Tony Award- winning Hairspray is the newest show that debuted in the Opal Theater. Lisa Bauer, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations for Royal Caribbean said that, “This show [Hairspray] will bring down the house.” It was recently announced too, that Allure of the Seas—sister ship to Oasis of the Seas—will feature the Broadway show Chicago. Many prospective passengers are looking forward to this addition.
It’s pretty clear that entertainment on cruise ships is being focused on more and more. Cruise Lines are trying to attract passengers with Broadway shows, celebrities, unique venues, and wild parades—in the case of Disney Cruise Lines. From what once was a normal daily night show has turned into a spectacle for the eyes; and what’s most shocking…it’s all at sea.
